Students in every grade level at schools are struggling in class. It’s not because they’re underachievers, or they’re not smart, or they don’t care, it’s because we’re working against them. The longer children and teens are forced to sit and grow roots in their chairs, the harder it will be for them to bloom. There is research that proves that students need adequate amounts of physical activity throughout the school day. Not only do they prevent obesity and obesity related issues, but they perform better academically also. In some cases, more time in physical education leads to improved grades. Drop-out rates were lower for youth who consistently participated in sports. It kept them occupied and motivated to do their work because they had energy and a stable mindset. Children who are more active are quicker to perform simple tasks, and have better working memories and problem solving skills than less-active children. They also perform better on standardized academic tests. It is recommended that all students get at least 60 minutes a day of vigorous or moderate physical activity. Only about half of all school-age children meet this guideline. The way to increase exercise is to promote physical education classes, recess and classroom breaks during the school day, encouraging after-school sports and walking or biking to school would help as well. Even though some children may not want to be active for 6o minutes a day, it is important to remember that it’s very important in their development and that it will help them in a better aspect in their future.

  1. I completely agree with what you're saying. I know if I had to sit in a classroom all day I wouldn't be very focused or want to stay. I find your blog very interesting so far.

  2. I also agree exercising 60 minutes a day greatly helps to be mentally balanced and improve mental health... I myself have experienced great gain from applying fitness into my work day or my studies.

  3. I have heard that you should take a break every hour when learning new information. I'll be keeping an eye on this blog, what ever will help make learning easier.

  4. I also agree on those points you made. The school works against kids, but joining a sport increases their chances of success. An observation I made is that most teachers favor jocks and preps, giving them a better grade regardless of how smart they are, and they are usually the most popular kids who classmates help out as well.

  8. I completely agree! Physical activity does increase the the blood flow in our brains and will help use concentrate more on school subjects. I know that sitting in my math class for 3 1/2 hours on Tuesday's and Thursday's ;)

I also agree that children should have at least 60 minutes, even 30 minutes is better than nothing, and it will start leading our future generations to a healthier life style.

  9. I completely agree! After I study for a while, i feel my body realy need to relax. Physical activity not only relax my bory, but also fresh my brain. In China, we have a big break between two classes every day, ususlly half an hour. Students are allowed to do some physical activities such as morning exercise and running. I think it's useful.

  10. I agree as well, from my personal experience after any sort of physical activity I feel that my brain is refreshed. Also physical activity (depending on what the activity may be) can also promote skills in children; like leadership, problem solving, and working together. I look forward to reading more about this topic. Extremely important for healthy future generations.

  11. I like your topic sentence as well as what your blog is about. Physical activity is a big factor that our students need daily, but it is isn't the only reason our students struggle. In your introduction you said, "It’s not because they’re underachievers, or they’re not smart, or they don’t care,it’s because we’re working against them." I feel those reasons are also factors that students struggle but physical activity is a necessary contribute to using our body as well as our brains. Who is working against the students? We are the students... so is the school or teachers working against us?

  12. I agree with your opinion, when i was in high school, i always looking forward to a p.e. class, to release my stress from other classes. I'm also focusing on writing my topic about Chinese education system. I think i can use some of the ideas about having more physical classes.

  13. Interesting Topic. I have heard a lot about this throughout the years. I know as a kid I always felt more on my accademics when taking a PE class. I wonder if this is more necissary for younger kids who are often distracted? Or if it is just as important for older kids aswell? I wonder...
